A Dark and Stormy Evening

Lions and tigers and bears . . . oh my!

With the ferocity of the wind yesterday and overnight, a few of those critters pictured above could have blown in from wherever.

Instead, they appeared as my screenshot this morning while the computer was rebooting from a power outage.

A wind storm arrived, almost unannounced, yesterday afternoon almost immediately after I had finished what I thought would be my last leaf pickup for the year.

I had read on Facebook that we were due for the high winds, but the part they didn't tell in the forecast was just how abruptly it arrived.

And, like those tigers above, its bite was vicious.

Within 30 seconds the yard I had just cleaned up minutes before was strewn with limbs, leaves, cones and other rubble.

A plastic panel on the barn had blown off, and, even Liam was relieved when summoned him to the house in the middle of his afternoon horse guarding.

My friend Karen from Hope sent a text asking if the wind was blowing here and noting that it had just "turned up three notches" out her way.

Twas a doozy, to say the least.

One of my friends on Facebook displayed a read-out indicating a gust of 78 mph at the south end of Lake Pend Oreille.

Another displayed a graphic showing a 50 mph gust and noted that it was "about as nasty as it gets on the lake tonight."

Bill reported a tree down near Murrays when he came home about half an hour after the winds began.  He said it had already been sawed into pieces.

Our neighbor on down Selle Road lost a storage shed when trees toppled over.

We were blessed not to have anymore damage, although Bill hasn't surveyed the woods yet.

We were especially blessed by missing only 30 seconds of the first half of the ZAGS game with a power outage which lasted through halftime and came back with the second half.

Within a minute or so after the buzzer, our power went off again.  Out came the lanterns and flashlights.

Then, Bill decided it was time to go on his usual electrical outage missions to see how extensive this one happened to be.

By the time he had driven just half a mile to Johnsons, he saw their lights on and lights on in the neighbors' houses to the north.

Then, he became worried that we were the only place without power.  What he hadn't noticed after leaving the driveway was that our power came back on.

Again, we're blessed and, as always, thankful to the linemen who go out into the night and the danger to see that we have power as soon as possible.

A survey of the yard this morning shows that many of those leaves swirling around the yard yesterday have blown off to other places, but there are many limbs and numerous pieces of tree bark lying about.

It will be one of the first projects on this much cooler and calmer day.  Maybe this time when I get it all cleaned up, I can finally rejoice in having completed the last fall cleanup for 2021.

Never a dull moment, and always joy every time the ZAGS entertain us with another win.

Happy Tuesday.
