Saturday Slight

I haven't quite made up my mind yet.

Yesterday afternoon could have been the ugliest day of 2022, at least so far.  It was easier taking pictures of "things" rather than scenes.

We do have mud season ahead, so some of the upcoming days could rival the gloom, the gray, the wet and the general unsightliness of pretty much any direction one looked.

Today?  Not so bad, at least out here in Selle where a bunch of the ugly got covered up by about an inch of snow.

This is just that time of year. It will get better.

Today is the day of the year when I always think about how Mike, Kevin and Marianne Brown's lives changed forever.

From March 12, 1954, and onward through most of the rest of my life, I would have to answer the question:  How come your sisters' names are Tibbs and you are Brown?  Even long after I married Bill and became a Love, I would hear the question.

Well, in case anyone still hasn't figured it out, Mike, Kevin and Marianne Brown's mother Virginia married Harold Tibbs on this day in 1954.

Later, when they had three kids, Barbara, Laurie and Jim, their last names were Tibbs, while the older three siblings kept their last name.

I have fond memories of this day because, as a 6-year-old always taking sack lunches to Lincoln School, I received a dollar from my mother for hot lunches while she and Harold were on their honeymoon.

When you were 6 in the 1950s, that was a big deal to carry around a whole dollar bill.

I was also pretty happy that Mother and the cowboy down the road at Racicots were getting married.  To say that was a monumental life change for us kids and for Mother and Harold would be an understatement.

I told Bill last night that I'd calculated earlier in the day and couldn't believe the answer:  that it was 68 years ago.

Hard to believe.

It was a good change for us three Browns and to have three more siblings as the years went on was even better.

I must also mention that this day is also significant because it's my grand-nephew Rory's birthday.  He's a college student now, and, if I'm correct, he is no longer a teenager.

Where DOES time go?

Happy Birthday, Rory.

In the  "let's escape to Denver or Salt Lake City" department, here's some fun news from a couple of my former students.

They both graduated from Sandpoint High School and eventually became a couple as well as successful and amazing culinary entrepreneurs, operating food trucks in the Denver area.

Most recently, they have opened three new restaurants in Denver and Salt Lake City.

Back in the early 1990s, when I was teaching photography, graphic arts and journalism along with advising the Sandpoint High Cedar Post and taking students to national student journalism conferences, Mandy and Steve were among the group who went to Denver.

I have some great memories of both of in my classes and on our travels around the Denver area.

While Mandy, an avid photographer, was usually an angel in my presence, in Steve's case, a few antics performed in the name of journalism and graphic arts stand out.

A hint:  he and his buddy Josh liked our minivan, especially when the passenger door occasionally swung open.

I must say, from quick glances at their CrockSpot website, some of what they learned in those classes has paid off with their amazing enterprises.

Some local horse people may remember Steve's grandfather, the late Larry Smith, a horse trainer. His grandmother Geri is happily enjoying her travels around the country.

Both Mandy and Steve have an abundance of other local family connections.

from the website:

Crock Spot made a debut to the marketplace in May of 2010. Under a 10 by 10 tent, couple Steven and Mandy offered a gourmet, fast casual concept where every dish is customized to their individual customer.

Crock Spot has been a Denver favorite for over 10 years and has received many accolades, including "Best Food Truck in Denver" by 5280 Magazine and
"Best Meals on Wheels" by Westword Magazine

Crock Spot has also been featured on several local TV news shows and received mentions from sites like BuzzFeed, The Denver Post, and several local blogs. They also were named one of the 50 Coolest Small Businesses in America by Business Insider!

Crock Spot has catered hundreds of corporate events, weddings, concerts, festivals, and many other large gatherings throughout Colorado. The ability to serve a large number of people in a short timeframe has added to the company’s reputation and appeal for events. Not to mention the food truly CROCKS!

Our Trucks

The Crock Spot adventure started on wheels. After becoming consistent favorites at the Cherry Creek Farmer’s Market and other local events, Steven and Mandy soon realized that they had a sustainable food business concept on their hands.

By 2011, they expanded their small business and were working to develop one of Denver’s premier gourmet food trucks, paving the way for the food truck scene in Denver.

They added a second truck to their fleet in 2017, allowing them to head up to the mountains more frequently to cater weddings and other events.

They're from Sandpoint, and we couldn't be any prouder.

Heck, after viewing their website, I almost want to jump in the car, head to Denver and Salt Lake City and sample their offerings.

If you ARE in either of these cities, check 'em out.  Really nice people along with loads of talent and vision.
