Saturday Slight

A beautiful January day yesterday, especially for Liam Licking.

The day felt like sunny, upbeat Fridays in January used to feel when I was teaching at Sandpoint High School.

Maybe it felt reminded me of those days because I spent part of yesterday morning at the high school.

I could feel and see the same electricity that Fridays before a big game always brought out in both students and staff during my teaching career.

In yesterday's case,  several athletic events and some other competitions, all led up to who was gonna win the "paddle" in the Battle for the Paddle between Sandpoint High and Lakeland High School.

Part of revving up for all those contests involved some dressing up with a surf theme.

When I saw these two outside the school office, I took their picture and then asked what classes they represented.

At first, they weren't sure what I meant, so I asked, "Are you a junior or a senior?"

The instant those words came from my mouth, the "student" on the right attacked me with the biggest, most jubilant hug imaginable.

"I'm almost 50!" she screamed, adding something like,  "I love you!"

It was nice to have made a Spanish teacher's day.

Later in the day, we learned that Willie's girls' team had won their late afternoon league game in a squeaker---another of those "one-pointers," which seem to become a regional Bulldog staple these days.

You can see yesterday's game story in the link below.

I have also learned from a family source this morning that Lakeland won the paddle.

Win or lose, I'm sure it was an unforgettable and fun day for students, staffs and fans at both schools.

Sandpoint's Aliya Strock is fouled with roughly 20 seconds to go in the Battle for the Paddle between the Bulldogs and Lakeland.

The SHS standout hit the second of two free throw shots to give the Bulldogs a 44-43 win.

Bill and I treated yesterday like one of those upbeat Fridays by actually going out on the town for dinner.

It was a busy night in town, but we found a table at Eichardts and luckily ordered the right meals from the menu.

From what we could gather when staff were telling diners that it would be an hour wait, the busYness in downtown Sandpoint overwhelmed the restaurant kitchen.

Fortunately, the problems did not affect our orders, so we enjoyed the change of pace from our usual Fridays.

Well, we've all had time to lick our wounds from Thursday night's ZAGS tough loss, so it's time to send a little love their way.

The ZAGS play tonight at 7 p.m.

This time they travel to Stockton, Calif., and take on the University of Pacific Tigers.

Let's hope for a rebound for the team and a pleasant, satisfying evening for all who watch the game.
