I took this top set of photos yesterday because of what they did not include: no snow, no ice, no puddles.
Just dry, firm, mostly level ground, offering easy walking and no worries about slipping on the ice.
I told Bill that the first escape from winter always puts me in a sense of awe.
In one case, it's the ease of mobility; in another, it's the realization of how much and for how lo-o-o-o-ng we do our best to grin and bear our months of winter.
Thanks to some help from my friend and neighbor Terra, Bill and I enjoyed a relatively carefree day traveling to Spokane to watch the ZAG women's basketball team and the ceremony for retiring ZAG and WNBA great Courtney Vandersloot's jersey.
Before the game, we enjoyed a short walk in the sunshine along the Spokane River. The feeling of comfortable air, pleasant sunshine and freedom of movement was exhilarating.
Funny how a few hours away from the snow makes one sit up and take notice when it appears again on the mountain tops and gradually dominates the landscape 'cept for a few brown, bare spots here and there.
The game in the Kennel was fun, as they all are. It took the ZAGS a while to get some offense going, but they finally pulled away from Portland and won.
We enjoyed our brief time in the big city, and happily took our time because we knew Terra would be putting the horses in the barn for the night and taking the dogs for another run.
So, we stopped for a bite to eat at the Sweet Lou's in Athol. It was our first time there. The service and food were great.
We arrived home in time to settle in and watch another Gonzaga game and another game of frustration.
But, as is often said, "A win is a win," and, yes, the men's team is now 21-5 after defeating BYU in a pretty ugly game.
It was great getting a taste of spring. We're back to wearing the Yaktrax and ugly piles and blankets of old, hard snow. This will be around for a while, but just getting a break makes it more tolerable.
It was fun to watch the ceremony honoring Courtney Vandersloot.
She has accumulated an amazing set of statistics and records over her years as a college and pro basketball player.

As if there hasn't been enough talk about basketball, one more item: below is the initial bracketing for the 4A division this coming week's Idaho Girls Basketball State Championships.
Sandpoint's Bulldogs play Minico at 1 p.m. PST on Thursday.
I'm pretty sure the Sandpoint's KSPT radio will be covering the games. Willie told us Friday that they will be streamed through an IHSAA feed, not You Tube like this last week's games.
When I learn the specifics, I'll post it.
GO, BULLDOGS!
Eye have done something besides watch basketball over the past several days.
Eye went to my appointment so that watching basketball and seeing neat images will continue with ease.
Twas my annual check-up and decision time about whether those cataracts would be removed.
Eye opted to wait until later in the year and get a new prescription for glasses and sunglasses for the time being.
It was actually a fun appointment because I met some new and fun people, including Carol and Sarah below.
They help Rosalee in the optical department.
Nice ladies. In fact, everyone at Sandpoint Optical is nice.
No basketball games today.
It's Super Sunday, and I've already put some ribs in the oven for slow cooking.
Whoever shows up will contribute to the Super Food Spread, and we plan to keep it laid back and enjoy the game, the company and the commercials.
Hope everyone's Super Bowl activities are fun and tasty.
Happy Sunday.
