Weekend Wrap

We took an afternoon trip to Canada yesterday.

My longtime friend Chris accompanied us.

She said she hadn't been to Canada for a number of years, so the drive was definitely a treat for all three of us.

We stopped off at the Porthill Cemetery which has been beautifully groomed for Memorial Day.

There's a Canada-U.S. monument marker at one corner of the cemetery, and the place was alive with gorgeous Monarch butterflies.

After crossing the border, we drove through Creston and then up to a rest stop on Kootenay Lake.

A friendly gentleman who lives in the area visited with us as we walked toward the docks.

And, some folks who had just come in from a kayaking trip were loading up their boats.

As we visited and did a little sightseeing, the sky began to look more and more ominous with dark clouds coming over the mountains.

After leaving the rest stop, we drove back to Creston where we had planned to have an early dinner at Jimmy's Pub and Grill.

It's a fun place where we have eaten several times before. We found a table in the deck area, and knowing those black clouds were blowing over Creston, we picked a table with an umbrella for cover.

That worked well until the lightning, thunder, wind and rain teamed up to send some really wet rain our way.

So, we grabbed our plates and drinks and found a table inside.

We enjoyed the rest of a great meal with wonderful service from Zoe, a native of Creston.

Zoe had graduated from high school in 2018.  She's very engaging, and she attributes that to being involved in drama for most of her life.

Zoe also told us that Prince Charles High School where Sandpoint High had enjoyed a couple of years of Student Council exchanges back in the 1990s has a new name.

It's now known as Kootenay River High School, which Zoe thinks is much prettier.

Anyway, it was a great time at Jimmy's, a restaurant founded by some Greek brothers and offering a variety of Greek dishes on its menu.

We enjoyed a lot of visiting, both going and coming, along with some dramatic weather changes and, as usual, beautiful scenery in both Canada and the United States.

A great afternoon adventure. And, speaking of weather, we had another wild and woolly night around here, thanks to the thunder and lightning and abundant rain drops.

I think we've had more thunder in a week than we sometimes have in an entire year, and the season is young.

Today, in Spain, Annie is completing her penultimate day of walking the Camino.

Tomorrow she should arrive at Santiago. I'll leave a link for you to check in on today's report.

She should have Day 14 posted fairly soon

In Iowa, as I type, Willie is donning a cap and gown and will soon march with the Grinnell staff and graduating seniors for the 2023 Commencement ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. Iowa time.

Debbie says they have had an action-packed weekend and have met as many Grinnell staff and students as possible.

In the photo below are their hosts from the Grennell faculty, Dr. Paul Hutchinson, associate professor, and his wife Jackie. Debbie says Jackie played NCAA volleyball and has coached at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and at Grinnell.

Willie with the other recipients of honorary doctorates at today's Grinnell Commencement:  Irma Pearl McClaurin,
Ham Serunjog and Peggy Barnett.

All three are also past graduates of Grinnell College.

Debbie gives Tara Rawlings, whose essay about Willie led to his being honored at this weekend's Commencement, a big smooch.

Tara, a Sandpoint High alum and a resident of our neighborhood,  will graduate from Grinnell today.

It's been a great and memorable all-around weekend, even with some crazy weather, and the cool down expected this week is very welcome.

Happy Monday.
