I'm sitting here at the computer with my space heater going.
Happy Summer.
No complaints here, though, because we've already had a pretty generous helping of summer, and it looks like plenty more is soon to come.
I haven't minded the cooler weather or the rain. We can always add more clothing when it's cold. The alternative clothing situation does not offer such flexibility.
Overnight rain also means not having to drag the hoses today, except for a few spots.
Plus, the grass in the pastures can use a moisture boost.
On this Wednesday morning, I'm fulfilling a promise to Bridgit.
I need to do that because when responding to an email she had sent me yesterday, I mistakenly addressed her by her last name.
Fortunately, she was very understanding.
Bridgit represents the Hotel Nexus in Seattle where we stayed two nights this past weekend.
Without going into detail, I'll simply note that we experienced a few glitches with our room during the first night's stay.
Hotels are very expensive in Seattle, so I'll also note that we paid a good price for our room.
Thinking about that and considering the oversights, I wrote a letter, outlining the situations we had experienced.
Within an hour, I received a thoughtful note from Bridgit, assuring me that the disappointment we had experienced as guests was unsatisfactory on their end.
She rectified our situation financially and offered further motivation for us to give the hotel another try in the future.
Talk about making one's day!
Both Bill and I were very impressed with the fast action on Bridgit's part and her sincere desire to exchange a disappointing stay with a better situation in the future.
No tangled web to navigate, no waiting on a telephone menu for what seems like an eternity, no excuses like what we often encounter when trying rectify many unpleasant situations.
Instead, I experienced prompt, direct and obvious evidence of a real human being at the other end.
This was refreshing and a pleasant reassurance that there are people out there who care.
Thanks, Bridgit.

This morning I saw some points about photography listed on a post by my friend and former student Chris, who's a photographer extraordinaire.
I thought they were worth sharing. They provide some excellent reminders for those of us who have a passion for taking pictures.
"The formula for doing a good job in photography is to think like a poet." ~ Imogen Cunningham
"Great photography is about depth of feeling, not depth of field." ~ Peter Adams
"If it makes you laugh, if it makes you cry, if it rips out your heart, that's a good picture. ~ Eddie Adams
"If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough." ~ Robert Capa
"Photography is an austere and blazing poetry of the real." ~ Ansel Adams
"To consult the rules of composition before making a picture is a little like consulting the law of gravitation before going for a walk." ~ Edward Weston
"A lot of photographers think that if they buy a better camera they’ll be able to take better photographs.
A better camera won’t do a thing for you if you don’t have anything in your head or in your heart."
~ Arnold Newman
I'm loving my lettuce this year.
It's not only pretty but it tastes good.
Last night we enjoyed chicken ranch wraps (ranch dressing instead of Caesar).
I have finally figured out the most efficient method of planting lettuce.
Once it reaches a certain level in the planting pot, I rob the pot of individual plants, stick them in the ground and watch them look scraggly and ugly for about ten days.
Then, suddenly, the ugly ducklings miraculously begin maturing into a sophisticated, attractive plant with the artistic leaves you see above.
A pleasant sight and definitely the promise of beautiful salad varieties ahead.
I have enough lettuce in to planting pots to keep this cycle going all summer and through the fall.
Annie's coming tomorrow and so is my farrier, so today is lawn-mowing day.
Looks like the clouds will lift and maybe before the end of the day, we'll experience a lovely summer day.
Happy Wednesday.
