The Long Way Home

We put in a long day in the car yesterday---around 11 hours.

Along the way, however, we enjoyed both eye candy of spectacular mountain peaks of the North Cascades and chocolate candy of Sheri's Sweet Shoppe in Winthrop.

Before leaving Anacortes, we also enjoyed some fresh-baked bagels at the Good Bagels coffee shop. I brought home a bag of bagels for when Annie comes this weekend.

Our route on Washington State HWY 20 took us past Bridie's original home near Concrete and past the famous suicide hill at the Omak Stampede.

Bill and I also enjoyed putting "faces" to other little Washington towns we've heard about for years but never seen.

Tonasket probably ranks top on my list, especially because of my drill team years when the SHS Ponderettes would perform at parades in Wenatchee and Spokane.

Tonasket was always there with its band and town banner. Until yesterday, I had no idea where it was located---just knew it was a little town in Washington.  We actually connected with Tonasket by making a gas stop.

Speaking of which, gas in Seattle was more than $5 per gallon, and it's about the same in some of the places where we passed through yesterday.

I'd also never been to Omak or Winthrop or Republic so yesterday trip took care of that.

We walked around Winthrop which was buzzing with tourists enjoying its old West feel and its sweet treats.

Bill and I will both vouch for the quality of those chocolates, having sampled both a turtle and a macaroon.  English toffee was being prepared as we walked through the sweet shoppe.

Even with the stops to take in town flavor, our trip, which also took us over the Flowery trail down into Usk,  was LONNNNG.

Twas nice to open the door here at home to the high-octane greetings of Liam, Foster and Bridie.

Dogs can make  you feel so good, especially after you've been gone a while.

Good to be home, thankful for Elisabeth who watches the place while we're gone and filled with dozens of good memories from a fun weekend with Annie in Washington.

Happy Tuesday.

I met this lovely dog yesterday.  She's from Spokane, and she's a rescue Saluki.

Her owners told me she had been hit by a car and that her back leg never completely healed.

She was a sweetheart.
