We read and heard a lot about a dead pig which almost started a war between the Americans and the British on San Juan Island.
Apparently a farmer shot a pig because it kept eating his potatoes.
The incident stirred up enough controversy, and it took some diplomacy between the Brits and the Americans stationed on the island during the mid 1800s.
There's much more to the story, but I can tell you it's hard to visit San Juan Island in the San Juan Islands off the northwest coast of Washington without hearing about the pig.
There's also a strong focus on whale watching too. We didn't see any whales yesterday while touring the island, but we did see a fox and maybe some seals.
We also saw a lot of beauty and experienced the feel of the maritime lifestyle while visiting both Roche Harbor and Friday harbor.
Lots of boats and beautiful boats too, along with gorgeous scenery, exquisite floral landscaping.
As evident with the number of photos I've posted this morning, there's no end to the beauty.
We enjoyed a day along with countless other tourists, taking short hikes, some geocaching, reading displays, sight seeing and relaxing at a couple of the local establishments.
It seemed like a teaser which could easily lure us back for more island adventures in the San Juans.
Beauty overload, for sure.
Bill also had a nice Father's Day, although our dinner plans had to change when the ferry bringing us back to Anacortes was an hour late. With most restaurants closed here, we enjoyed our first experience at Mod Pizza, where you go down the line and tell 'em what you want on your pizza.
Unexpected choice for Father's Day dinner, but it was fun and tasty.
Today we say good bye to Annie and head home via the North Cascades highway. I understand we're in for another day of beauty overload.
We can deal with that.
Happy Monday. Enjoy the photos.
