Springing Along, Hippie Chicken Farm

💙💚Happy Birthday to my li'l sis, Laurie.💙💛

It looks like we may have a dry day today.

In the grand scheme of weather events, yesterday's rain was not appreciated.

I had to take a group photo for an assignment.  Yesterday was the only day that everyone in the group could meet.

Since I always take these photos outside, I stressed throughout the entire week and even said a few "Hail Mary's" in hopes that the rain would hold off for my photo shoot.

It did not.

I should have had Bill shoot a video, showing the efforts made to get these people positioned and then the split-second timing snapping pictures while they were their doing their best to pretend that it really was not cold and that rain was not falling and that they were to smile through it all.

They performed masterfully.

I did have to remove a few raindrops from their clothing (post picture), but their expressions were perfect and they looked totally relaxed in spite of the misery they were experiencing.

They were great sports.

So, that stress has now passed, and today I intend to enjoy spring and probably even some indoor action watching the women's NCAA national championship basketball game.

This year, basketball, for me,  has been an all-consuming phenomenon, between watching Willie's team, following ZAGS, both men and women and then having difficulty pulling myself away from the March Madness games, even after the ZAGS were no longer playing.

It has been truly amazing and fun being fully engaged in both men's and women's basketball.

The women have arrived, and the acknowledgement of their arrival, with individual personalities and team stories, has added an exciting new dimension to the winter basketball viewing experience.

The nice part at this point is that I really don't care who wins the women's championship; it's just fun to follow the stories and watch the action.

So, GO Iowa and South Carolina!

Well, we made it through the winter, honestly, by dreaming about spring.

1944 Dufort Road south of Sandpoint off HWY 95 and the driveway just past Round Lake State Park.

With this year's spring comes Hippie Chicken Farm.

It's a family operation, set to open May 1 with Sherryl and her daughter Brittany involved in the planning, planting, creating, marketing, maintenance, etc.

Meanwhile hubby and dad Casey, who works full time, helps out with the "heavy lifting" and construction and general support.

Casey, SHS 1980,  played quarterback on the Bulldogs football team a while back. He was also one of my students.

Meanwhile, Sherryl graduated from SHS in 1981. The couple have another daughter Kayla in Japan.  She just launched her own Omorphia swimwear line.

from Sherryl:

Casey and I inherited this property from Larry and Wilda Kirk. You may remember Preston Kirk from high school. Preston passed away in 1984 from a parachute accident while jumping for the Golden Knights.

Larry and Wilda had no other children and we became a part of their family a couple years later.

Wilda passed away in 2015 and Larry passed in 2019 which is when we were given this incredible gift of their home to call our home.

We will be offering assorted leafy greens, fresh flower bouquets, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, carrots, beets, artichokes, broccoli, a variety of squash, pumpkins, fresh herbs, farm fresh eggs, beans, snap peas, blueberries, blackberries, and plums.

I also have a line of Hippie Chicken Herbal remedies, such as teas, tinctures, and oils. Many of the herbal remedies are made with herbs grown here on the farm.

We will also offer a bouquet bar event. People will be able to schedule a group event to come and make their own bouquets with friends and family.

We should be opening around the 2nd to 3rd week in May. I plan to be open Friday's from noon to 7p.m., Saturday's 10a.m. to 7p.m. I will most likely open one day mid-week as the garden progresses.

The farm stand is a self-serve stand. We will be set up to take cash, debit and credit card payments. We hope to expand our growing season next year with the use of greenhouses and high tunnels.

It's called Hippie Chicken because Sherryl created these chicken swings, which have been a popular product at craft shows, including A Taste of Coeur d'Alene.  The farm name evolved from that enterprise.

Good luck, Casey, Sherryl and Brittany.

This looks like great fun.
