It's a Beautiful Friday

Flowers continue to bloom and look "purty," and my garden has been expanded via seeds and transplants.

Yesterday's sowing including radishes, green beans, sweet peas, California poppies, marigolds and sunflowers.

I also transplanted some cabbage and some flowers.

More green beans and potatoes will get the nod on this gorgileous Friday.

Our dogs also went to the vet for their bordatello vaccinations.

During Foster's check-up, I met the new vet and owner of Center Valley Veterinary Hospital.

Her name is Liz Kelly, and she comes from Pennsylvania but grew up in England.

Dr. Kelly told me she attended vet school in Scotland.

So, an interesting background and a very nice lady.

She gave Foster the seal of approval, which makes us happy for the little guy.

Tomorrow is Kentucky Derby Day.

Betcha can't guess which one is my favorite.

The name deals with one of my passions.

Just in case you can't guess, "Journalism" sounds like a good name for a horse and maybe even a winner.

The 3-year-old colt got its name from co-owner Aron Wellman, who was the sports editor of the Beverly Hills High School newspaper.

Journalism has won four straight races after finishing third in his debut last October, all with Rispoli as the jockey.

Adding more reasons for me to choose this horse is that it was literally "journalism" which led me to visit Beverly Hills High School back in the 1990s.

At the time, I was advising the Sandpoint High Cedar Post newspaper. That year we took 24 students to the JEA national convention in Long Beach.

Our Bulldog basketball coach Jack Dyck had moved to Sandpoint after serving as athletic director at Beverly Hills High School.

When he heard about our trip, he offered to help chaperone and make arrangements for the kids to visit Beverly Hills High School as well as the set of "Entertainment Tonight."  He knew the producer so it worked out well.

So, that's what we did, and this morning to see the Beverly Hills connection and the reasoning behind the horse named "Journalism," it seemed like a no-brainer choice.

So, why not???

Whatever the case, I love the Derby, and this information makes this year's version all the more interesting.

Good luck, Aron and Journalism.

Your triumph tomorrow would certainly provide a lift for all the journalists in our country whose craft has been so demonized over the past several years.
