Duped and Defeated

Don't worry.  Be happy.  It's not as bad as the posting title might indicate on this Sunday morning.  

Actually, I'm not worrying and I'm being pretty happy today.

Along with a lot of other folks, I felt a little duped about 10 o'clock yesterday morning when I saw my horses running across the pasture,  seeking cover from a downpour.

"Rain, there's not s'posed to be any rain today," I thought to myself. "Maybe it's just a quick shower."

I had just come inside from raking up a cart's worth of leaves and was taking a short break before continuing the raking project.

Well, the rain came, and it stayed all day and most of the night.  There's no sign in my yard this morning that I did any raking yesterday. 

What happened to those weather forecasts promising a "beautiful weekend"?  

"Get out there and rake up your leaves; it will be perfect," one of the prognosticators advised in a Friday evening forecast.

Well, we got duped.

Later, I was wondering what happened to all of our family's favorite college football teams---'cept for Notre Dame, that is.

LSU-----ouch, in the last minute, a sad loss to No. 1 Alabama.

Boise State---ouch, just didn't play well and lost by two points to San Diego State.

Washington State---yikes---and to hear and read the rant by the "million-dollar" coach after his Cougars lost 49-6 to Utah.  

Somehow this million-dollar coach and his disdain for his players reminds me of a principal we (staff and students) once survived.  He exhibited similar disdain for his staff and students AND skipped town before his first year ended.

Idaho---sad but not surprising----42-13 to San Jose State.  After all, a brand-new,  young coach at the helm in the middle of a disappointing season.

I must say that my friend Janet's team---and one I watch closely---Oregon, has continued its dominance and exciting action.  What a game yesterday against a tough USC team!

And, I LOVED the Notre Dame victory in a third overtime.  They're 9-0 this year.  Notre Dame nostalgia has returned.  Heck, NBC even ran the movie Rudy last night.  Doesn't get any better than that.

Anyway, it's a morning filled with sports disappointments, but the sting usually disappears as the day wears on.

And, this first day of early darkness IS starting out as a rather nice day.  

After yesterday's constant drizzle, I didn't even want to listen to weather forecasts last night. 

Seems the forecasts are about as reliable or changeable as those gazillion polls we see and hear every hour upon the hour about this year's Presidential election.

How many more hours until it's over?

We could save ourselves a lot of misery by signing off the Internet, turning off the TV, never listening to the radio until sometime late in the week.

But somehow, for folks like me who thrive off from what's going on in the world, there's no room in the discipline book for such a draconian move. 

I'll weather through the next few days, and I'm sure my blood pressure will fluctuate with regularity every hour on the hour as this poll says my candidate is losing and that poll says he's miles ahead. 

Just like the weather forecasts, I'd say.  

If you don't like it, wait five seconds.

Only problem is that statement seldom works with us here in North Idaho.  

When the "unforecast"  rain starts, we have to wait a whole lot longer than seconds or minutes for it to change.  

With that in mind, I'd better get out and enjoy what's left of this day.
