OMG Autumn Splendor

I told Bill a while back that I'd like to go to Canuck Pass/Basin.

At first, the motive involved possible huckleberries coming on late in the season.

As the days went by, the huckleberry potential became less important in comparison to taking in some autumn beauty in the high country northeast of Bonners Ferry near the Montana and the United States-Canadian border.

Yesterday turned out to be the day.  Once we learned that my younger brother would not arrive until late in the day, Bill and I wasted no time climbing in the pickup and heading north.

We were not disappointed.

Jaw-dropping.

That's the only way I can describe what we encountered once we approached Canuck Pass, which offers views of mountaintops far into Canada.

Those vistas are always amazing, but it was the close-up myriad of stunning colors along the roadside that kept our eyes focused and our minds alive with total awe.

As is often the case, we had the area pretty much to ourselves.  We saw a camper along the road and a couple of tents with chair.  More than likely, the occupants of both camping areas were off hiking.

Once we reached an area down in the basin, we parked, pulled out our hiking poles and started down a road, which Bill says just ends.

We walked almost a mile.  Before we turned around to head back, we could hear a vehicle coming up the road.

Two ladies from Lewiston had driven around the general area and really didn't know where they were.

"I just want out of here," the lady on the passenger repeated several times during our late-afternoon visit.

Bill gave them the simplest directions possible for them to get back to Bonners Ferry where they were staying for the night.

Other than these ladies, waved at one other guy standing at his pickup and spent the rest of the drive talking to each other.

Truly a fabulous afternoon for enjoying this year's edition of stunning fall beauty.

When we arrived back in Colburn, my younger brother had arrived.  We said a few hellos and we'll all talk later today when we load up the kayaks and go for some paddling.

Mother Nature has been good, and we are taking advantage of every moment.

Happy Friday. Enjoy the photos.
