Mid-May Reflections

Perfect!

Some rain and interesting clouds and thunder passed through the area over night.  As I type, a steady morning rain is hitting the roof outside my window.

With the summerlike conditions, a little rain on the landscape provides a nice cleanse and some nourishment to our beautiful green fields.

Plus, I won't have to water so much today.

Our outdoor scenery is nothing short of magnificent these days.  And, it looks like this welcome beauty will be extended with the moisture.

This weekend is the Lost in the '50s celebration, and the forecast looks pretty much like this past weekend's gorgeous weather.

Love it.

I managed to get the rest of my potatoes planted yesterday and just have to plop a couple of pumpkin seeds in the manure pile.

When the rest of the cukes and 'maters go out, Gardening 2023 will be off to an epic start.

Please, Mother Nature, do not surprise us with any freezing temperatures in the next few weeks.

We deserve a good growing year.

This is Doc.  He's a 3-year-old and new to the neighborhood.

He sure took my eye when I passed by his field yesterday.

Not exactly a wild goose chase; more like a parade with a purpose.

What a beautiful sight to see here in the neighborhood!

Dedicated to Annie who's been walking and talking with cows in Spain.

Our Selle cows are pretty social too.

We have a friend in Stoneyford, Ireland, who owns and runs a business which was established by his family many years ago. His name is Fred Malzard.

Fred is the proprietor of Malzard's Pub, which serves as the community's gathering place and as the force behind a variety of local sports and music activities.

As Bill and I have gotten to know Fred over the years, we've told him that he reminds us of a businessman we know in Sandpoint who owned and managed the family car dealership.

In addition to being a businessman, Fred is an instrumental leader in other community events in the small town near Kilkenney.

He's also a gracious gentleman who always takes time to make others feel important.

Fred reminds me of Sandpoint's Jack Parker, who turned 90 today.

Like Fred, Jack has spent a lifetime dedicating his time, energy and leadership to all things Sandpoint.

In his younger years, he took over the family owned Sandpoint Motors, the local Chevrolet dealership on Cedar Street.

Later, after going into partnership with Greg Taylor, the business became known as Taylor-Parker.

While managing the business, Jack also devoted his time to numerous community organizations, including Rotary, Bulldog Bench and the local hospital where he served on the board.

I'm sure the list of Jack's other civic pursuits is long, but I do know for a fact that Jack is not just a highly respected leader and visionary.

He's a wonderful human being---just like Fred Malzard:  gracious, friendly, always community-minded.

Like Fred, Jack is justifiably proud of his family. His mother, local teaching legend Mary Parker was my senior English teacher.  His wife Shirley aka Shirl the Pearl, taught English with me at Sandpoint High.

And, I worked with his four amazing kids Jackie, David, Greg and Anne Marie as an English teacher and adviser.

In my interactions with Jack over the years, I have always appreciated the respect and friendship he extended my way.

Just the other day, I called his house, figuring that his birthday was close at hand and hoping to connect with Shirley, his wife, to make sure.

When Jack answered instead of Shirley, I was momentarily taken aback, but then, without identifying myself, proceeded to ask him how old he was.

"89," he said.

"89 and how many days?" I asked.

"I'll be 90 in four days," he responded.  "Hello, Marianne. How are you? I read your blog every day."

No success on a prank phone call with this guy!

We moved on to enjoy a nice chat. Twas just like every other encounter I'd ever experienced with Jack.

And, so, Jack, if you're taking time out from all the family celebrating today, I hope you read the blog and this "Happy Birthday" from the Love family to one of Sandpoint's finest.

I guarantee that if you, Jack, ever met Fred Malzard from Ireland, you'd see a lot of fine traits that would look mighty familiar.

Have a great day, old friend! Hope you enjoy your celebration.

From Luke Mayville, who reports phenomenal interest in Reclaim Idaho's next Initiative movement.

Dear North Idaho Supporters of Reclaim Idaho,

It’s been two weeks since our coalition filed the Open Primaries Initiative, a ballot initiative that would end Idaho’s closed primary elections and give power back to Idaho voters.

Today we’re excited to share next steps for how we’ll kickstart this campaign.

But first, let me pause to remind you that today is an Election Day. In many communities across the state, there are high-stakes elections for school levies, bond measures, library-board seats, and more. If there’s an election in your community, please make a plan to get to the polls and vote before 8pm

Now, back to the Open Primaries Initiative.

This campaign continues to build incredible momentum. In just 14 days, we've raised over 700 financial contributions and nearly 600 Idahoans have signed up to volunteer.

Now it's time to get organized. During the next three weeks, we'll be holding regional zoom calls in every part of the state with the goal of mapping out the first phase of our signature drive. If we're successful, volunteers will leave these calls with a plan of action for kicking off the signature drive at the local level.

If you can, we need you to join us for a very important zoom call on May 23rd at 5:30pm pacific time. Will you click below and RSVP?

Thank you!
