When ya have a day that is marked with happiness, joy and gratitude all day long, it's a bit rare AND it's pretty good day.
Yesterday was such a day.
Not only did I turn 76, but I also experienced a full day of reminders of why life on this earth is so precious and of the people around us who make it that way.
Birthdays might revolve around a single person, but for that individual, the celebration really serves as a meaningful reminder of the significance and appreciation for all who play a part in our lives.
That's precisely what I'm thinking about today as I reflect upon my 76th birthday celebration.
Seeing family members go out of their way to make it a special day is beyond heart warming.
A card from Bill in the early morning suggested to me that the elk we saw in the hay field the other night may have been an omen for just how this birthday celebration would unfold.
The message was written with a pen obtained from Silken Thomas Hotel and Restaurant a year ago when we celebrated a portion of my 75th in Kildare, Ireland.
The card's envelope is now in a glass of water in preparation for planting.
Yes, flower seeds after that soaking will go into a pot full of soil and eventually sprout into beautiful blossoms, inspiring good memories of special times.
Knowing that Annie and Bill took care of the details of the day, which included some horseback riding with my niece Laura and a sumptuous feast on the deck which also included Laura, Kevin, Barbara, Laurie, Willie and Debbie.
We enjoyed some quality visiting at the barbecue. Then, everyone went their separate ways, including Bill who took Annie to the airport.
I enjoyed the evening quiet time reflecting on what a wonderful day it had been and knowing that I am blessed.
Today is a new day.
On this day, my sister-in-law Mary is celebrating her birthday in Spain with Mike, Maureen and Sean.
And, I'm sure she's also feeling the love from so many of her circle of friends and family.
Yes, birthdays truly are a celebration of one's existence.
More importantly, though, they serve as reminders to each of us on these special days that it's the people in our lives who really deserve the celebration.
Their gestures, big and small, make our day, and for that we are grateful.
Thanks to all who made me smile and pinch myself almost all day long.
Much appreciated.
